An office for healthy living

Keeping fit isn’t just about having a good diet and regular exercise, it’s also about working in a healthy building. That’s the finding of research into the benefits of access to healthy food, fitness facilities and bike parks at work, along with having well-designed lobbies and stairwells, and good indoor air quality. The research has now led to a new technique for assessing and certifying the healthiness of the work environment. Called Fitwel, it was created by two U.S. government agencies and is being made available to building managers across America by a non-profit organization, the Center for Active Design. Fitwel’s online questionnaire takes people through more than 60 different criteria for a healthy work environment, and then provides an overall score for their building.
