Schools swap detention for meditation
Instead of sending misbehaving children to detention where they stare off blankly in silence, educators at Robert W. Coleman elementary school in Baltimore are trying out an entirely new approach that shows great results. It’s called the “Holistic Me afterschool program” and it welcomes students into a colorful relaxation room where they are taught a mix of yoga, mindfulness practices, meditation and breathing exercises. In addition to these calming techniques, students are also encouraged to speak with professionals about behavioral issues. Since launching two years ago, the school has not issued a single suspension.
