The OECD, through its ongoing work with the government and businesses, has made considerable efforts to champion a way of thinking that places people’s well-being at the heart of economic growth. This emphasis on the importance of a “better life” as a key component of societal progress has translated into a unique international indicator: the Better Life Index. Created by the OECD, the index allows users to compare well-being across countries, based on 11 essential topics in the areas of material living conditions and quality of life.
OECD identified 11 key criteria for a Better Life to be measured in 36 countries around the world. Of these, the most highly regarded by individuals were satisfaction, education and health. Other criteria included housing, income, work, social bonds, environment, civic engagement, security and work-life balance.
This interactive tool allows viewers to see how countries perform according to the set criteria. Each factor is visually represented by individual petals that form a “flower” depicting a country’s overall performance. People can create, personalize and submit their own index by choosing the topics and the comparative importance of each criterion. These “crowd sourced” indexes help refine data and general findings of the Better Life Index.
This partnership will start the Quality of Life conversation with actors in both the public and private sectors. The partner organizations will also challenge others to explore how individual needs can be reconciled with the goals of organizations, as well as explore ways of placing primary emphasis on what actually improves Quality of Life.
“Improving Quality of Life is the cornerstone of future growth,” says Sodexo Chief Executive Officer Michel Landel. “We are therefore very pleased to work with the OECD, which has done so much to emphasize the importance of a ‘Better Life’ as a key component of societal progress.”
Sodexo, global leader in Quality of Life services, and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have embarked on a three-year partnership to better understand and to promote Quality of Life as a factor in the development and progress of society.
