UK schools using body cameras to enforce order – but at what cost?

The UK school system is testing out a rather controversial approach to reducing disruptive behavior and violence in schools: body cameras 1 . Although 37 percent of teachers said they would agree to wear a body camera and one in ten believe that the usage of body cameras will eventually be a widespread practice, those opposed to the high-tech solution are speaking up as well.

Many educators say the use of body cameras will change the relationship between educators and students – turning schools in to “prisons” and students into “suspects.” Rather than turning to technology, those against the practice stress the need to focus on more meaningful ways to address student behavior, such as specialized staff training andprograms to foster a supportive school culture.
